“Each of my creations begins with desire; a longing to create art that invites an interaction or a subtle challenge to the existing relationships with the self, the world, and the observer. From my fascination with the connective and subtle spiritual quality of storytelling throughout human history and across cultures, the art of mask making also “spilled out” from my canvases. I am inspired by exploring the experiences in our lives that bind us together, as a beautifully diverse, and necessarily diverse, world community. I strive to emphasize our shared aspirations, joys, tensions, triumphs or sadness in times of peace or challenge. I desire to lovingly hold a mirror up to reveal our undeniable and tragic modern disconnection from the natural world. Each piece, then, returns to the beginning again but with new desires; the desire to depict, translate or even transform these commonalities into recognizable, accessible, empathetic, and healing, artistic expressions; and perpetually returns as the desire to create that “something” that reaches beyond my own self and yet, still is escorted through my hands and my senses.” -Jennifer Todd
